I erased by entire disk accidentally on my iMac, panicked on doing a clean install on my mac. I could not start a system by pressing CMD+R neither holding OPT worked. An empty USB drive (8 GB or larger): In this guide, you will write Yosemite Installer onto a USB drive, and boot your computer from that drive to install OS X Yosemite. The USB drive must be at least 6 GB in size. Making a USB installer is an easiest task if you already downloaded the Yosemite installer '.App' file. For downloading the file you should go to the 'App Store' and then select the 'Updates' tab on the top right position. Click on the 'free upgrade' option for downloading the Yosemite installer file. I repeated the install after closing the 'Install OS X' app that downloading Yosemite from the app store auto opens. (right-click on the icon to quit). That install (Yosemite to a 16GB USB stick) worked fine for everything except setting the icon, which the Diskmaker app told me was fine.

Nope it didnt work, gave -999 error, turns out i need to have mavericks for this to run. Had to resort to another way. Fortunately there is a free third party app DiskmakerX, that can create a usb boot disk for mavericks, lion, yosemite.
In about 20 mins, i was able to create my boot installer and my erased iMac is up and running with the installer. Mac camera zoom. Wonderful, sigh of relief!
